Types of Arthritis
Arthritis describes a collection of more than 100 different diseases that cause muscle and bone pain, most commonly from the wearing down of the cartilage that protects the ends of bones. Arthritic pain can affect many different parts of the body, such as the hands and wrists, knees, ankles, hips, and spine. It can also affect nearby tendons as they can become aggravated when a joint is overused.
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which often develops in the spine, hips, or knees with age. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease, is one of the more painful types of arthritis where the linings of the joints are inflamed, leading to swelling and joint deterioration. This type of arthritis is most often found in the hands and feet.
"I was seen very promptly, they took good care of me. All staff members were extremely nice. One of my favorite places of all time."- R.O. / Yelp / Mar 10, 2018
"Attended the ER today when my mom fell down and sprained her wrist. The staff was outstanding with service and how good they made all of us feel there. Prices where great and we got out of there fairly quick. Thank you again to all the staff for the great work and professionalism. Luis Valdez"- L.V. / Yelp / May 18, 2020
"I had a recent health event that required immediate medical assistance on a holiday. Since iCare had very good reviews and was close to our home, I asked my wife to take me there. I’m very glad that I did! Their positive online ratings are well deserved but based on my experience they under-represent the extraordinary quality of medical service. It’s a 5-star facility throughout every phase of patient care. Their check-in process is efficient, compassionate and simple. Moving to a room for triage and diagnostics was better than most "normal" providers I've worked with over the years. It was clear that all of the PA's, nurses and doctors cared about me. Everyone played a part in making a very stressful situation manageable. The visit also required advanced imaging by CT Scan. The findings led to a specialist followup later that week which further confirmed the quality of their medical services. The imaging, radiologist write-up, and physician notes were noted as excellent. Lastly, Dr. Seungdamrong is absolutely world-class. This was a complicated situation that he handled professionally, thoroughly and with a clear concern for my personal well being. Thank you! I sincerely hope that you don't need to visit an urgent care facility, but if you live in the N. Frisco area I strongly encourage you to visit iCare. I didn't expect the quality of care to exceed my regular provider experience. iCare does!"- R.H. / Google / Mar 06, 2020
"Came in to figure out why I was so sick (not covid) and everyone was super nice to me and made me comfortable. Took a long time because they’re super busy, but very understandable. Good ER experience."- A.H. / Google / Jun 20, 2020
"I would recommend iCare to anyone. The staff is always polite and willing to take care of you or loved one. I would choose this facility everytime."- K.B. / Google / Jun 17, 2020
Risk Factors for Arthritis
While the exact cause of arthritis is still unknown, many risk factors have been identified. Age, in particular, is the leading cause of arthritis. As we age, the cartilage that surrounds our joints naturally deteriorates. Also, women are more likely to have arthritis than men. Additionally, obesity and your lifestyle can lead to many types of arthritis. Obesity can add stress to the joints, increasing deterioration of the cartilage and lining. Arthritis can also result from injury or overuse of joints from playing sports or a job that requires heavy lifting and repetitive movement.
What to Expect with Arthritis Pain
When you come into the iCare, our skilled team of physicians will begin with a medical history interview and a physical exam. To get a better understanding of your arthritis, you will be asked about the severity of your pain and other symptoms. After evaluating your muscle strength, range of motion, and stability, the physician may conduct blood and laboratory tests in our CLIA/COLA-certified onsite laboratory to learn more if necessary.
Depending on the severity, pain management may include prescription medication, over-the-counter pain relievers, or a cortisone injection. Others may benefit more from physical therapy programs, such as aquatic therapy, or exercise that stretches and strengthens joints and muscles, such as yoga or pilates. Additionally, our physicians will oftentimes provide you with instructions on how to lessen your pain in day-to-day activities with at-home exercises and pain management relief recommendations.
