Here in Texas, we get a lot of hot days that can make it difficult to stay hydrated. Dehydration can occur as a result of sweating too much on a hot day, from an illness that causes you to vomit excessively, or from any other event that prevents your body from getting the water it needs. No matter the cause or the severity, at the iCare ER & Urgent Care in Frisco and South Fort Worth, TX our team of doctors are experienced in treating both the causes and symptoms of dehydration. Our modern facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art tools and technology, private exam rooms, and an onsite CLIA/COLA certified laboratory so that we can quickly diagnose and treat your dehydration. Offering IV medication fluids and other emergency care, you can rest assured that iCare can help.

Without treatment, dehydration can affect your health in serious ways. If you notice symptoms of dehydration after being in the heat or after being sick, you should visit the iCare center as soon as possible. Generally, symptoms include extreme thirst, dry mouth, a swollen tongue, muscle weakness, dizziness or faintness, exhaustion, confusion, a racing heart, headache, dark urine, and decreased urine. Additionally, if you experience a fever over 101º F, vomiting that lasts longer than a day or diarrhea that lasts longer than 2 days, sudden weight loss, low blood pressure, sunken eyes and dry skin, reduced sweating, or extreme confusion and weakness, you should come in for treatment immediately. You may need to be treated in our 24/7 emergency room if you have a fever above 103º F along with severe weakness or lethargy, difficulty breathing, chest pain, stomach pain, unconsciousness, seizures, or no urine output for 12 hours.

Seeking Medical Care

If you notice the above symptoms, you should cease any activity and rest in a cool place while drinking water or a sports drink. You might also put towels soaked in cool water on your neck, wrists, and ankles. If your symptoms don’t go away after an hour, you should come into iCare for treatment right away so that your dehydration does not worsen. Our team will be able to treat your dehydration quickly and effectively in either the urgent care center or the emergency room, depending on the seriousness of your dehydration symptoms. It is important to note that dehydration is especially dangerous in babies, children, and the elderly.

What to Expect

iCare has the equipment and qualifications to treat your dehydration, whether it is mild or severe. Once you come into iCare, our team will evaluate your condition with a medical history interview and a physical exam. If your dehydration is severe, you may be sent to the ER for treatment. We may also begin to replace lost fluids from your body with intravenous (IV) fluids and make sure you rest.
