If it’s difficult to swallow and you feel like your throat is on fire, you might be suffering from a sore throat or strep throat. Our Urgent Care team is here to help with diagnosis and treatment.
What is the Difference Between Sore Throat & Step Throat?
The symptoms are similar, so it can be hard to tell the difference between a sore throat and strep throat. A sore throat can be a common symptom that is caused by many illnesses; strep throat is caused by a specific type of bacteria.
Not only will diagnosis help the doctor determine the right treatment plan, but it is essential to determine the cause of the sore throat to know whether it’s contagious. A strep infection is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, which is highly contagious.
The only way to know the difference is by visiting a doctor for a strep test. There’s no need to wait for a doctor to schedule an appointment – strep tests can be done immediately in an urgent care.
Strep Throat Symptoms
When a sore throat is caused by strep bacteria, it is common for the symptoms to start suddenly. Symptoms often include:
- Sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Tonsils are swollen and red
- Body aches and chills
- Red or white spots can be seen in the throat
- Neck lymph nodes are swollen and tender
- Vomiting or nausea (in children)
Why Immediate Treatment is Important
If you have strep throat, then antibiotics can be used to alleviate the infection quickly. This treatment helps you avoid the discomfort of symptoms that continue to worsen. Additionally, antibiotic treatment is beneficial to prevent potential complications, such as rheumatic fever.
Strep throat can spread easily to other people nearby. Immediate treatment minimizes the chances that you will pass it on to other people you come in contact with.
Whether you have strep throat or a sore throat caused by a different condition, a few things can be done to support healing. Drink plenty of fluids and get a lot of rest. Eat cold, soft foods that help with throat soothing. Several times a day, gargle a glass of warm saltwater.
