iCare – Head Trauma & Concussions – Emergency Room Services Page
A sudden blow or violent shaking of the head can cause a traumatic brain injury, and immediate medical care is recommended. The skull protects the brain, but the delicate tissue inside the brain can be injured by trauma. The injury starts at the time of impact, and the progression of injury can continue for as long as 72 hours. Seeking immediate treatment in the nearest emergency room can reduce the complications of the injury.
Do You Need Medical Attention for a Head Injury?
How do you know when you need to visit an emergency room for head trauma? A small hit to the head might result in a tender spot for a few days, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to see a doctor. Here are some of the most common symptoms that indicate you need immediate medical services:
- Loss of consciousness
- Increasing confusion or irritability
- In-and-out of consciousness
- Double vision
- Blurry vision
- Severe neck pain
- Problems talking or walking
- Convulsions or seizure
- Leg or arm weakness, tingling, or burning
- Increasing headache
- Strange behavioral response
- Difference in pupil size (one is larger than the other)
If you suspect a concussion or a brain injury, then it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Even seemingly mild symptoms can become severe without proper medical treatment. Sometimes the above symptoms will occur soon after the head trauma occurs. But new symptoms can occur up to 24 hours after the injury.
Concussion Treatment: What to Expect
When you visit iCare ER and Urgent Care, we provide a full-service physical exam and diagnosis. Sometimes, an MRI or CT scan can be used if the symptoms are severe. Immediate medical services can be administered to reduce discomfort and address issues that could lead to complications.
After the emergency treatment, it is important to take a break from both mental and physical activities. Take time off school or work so you can rest at home to support your recovery. Our specialized medical team can also offer personalized treatment advice based on your individual needs.
